What is LED TV ?

In my recent posts, LED TV Buying Guide, one of the steps in achieving ultimate enjoyment by buying LED TV is to "Know the Trends". It is the second step, after you already defined your needs.

In the market nowadays, there are so much hype surrounding the introduction of LED TV, the term, similar to LCD, confuses new customer and lead them to disappointment after they grab their first LED TV. Their disappointment usually came from their misunderstanding about what LED TV really is.

LED is abbreviation for Light Emitting Diodes, which refer to the backlight system in new LCD TV's. For your information, LCD means Liquid Crystal Display, and LED is their backlight system. To set the record straight, LED TV is basically LCD TV with LED backlight system, it is different to older LCD TV which uses fluorescent-type backlight system.

However, LED backlight system has its own advantages compared to the old backlight system, thus don't get it wrong if you think that LED TV is just waste of your money and it ain't worth it to grab LED TV if you already own LCD TV.

2 types of LED TV

There are 2 types of LED TV on the market right now, one with Edge Backlighting, and the other with Full Backlighting. The image above can give you quick comparison between old system, edge-LED system, and full-LED system.

In Edge lighting method, a series of LED placed along the outside edges of the screen. It will result to thinner TV because of the LED placement. However, it will lack of the brightness consistency, having brighter image on the edge of your screen, due to its nature as the backlight sources. It also have less depth on its black level compared to other lighting method.

In Full lighting method, LED's are placed behind the screen, it will then enable the possibility of "local-dimming", which we now normally see on better LED-TV. Local Dimming is the technology to control specific area of LED to be turned on/off, which gives viewer more control of brightness and darkness of the screen.

Consider these 2 types of LED TV before making your decisions, our individual product page always comes with technical description and key features of respective product, as it meant to help you to make your decision.
